Most people completely dread packing up the kitchen for an upcoming move. You must deal with delicate dishes, appliances, cutlery, and the various odds and ends that are crammed all over the kitchen shelves. This is not the kind of job that can be rushed, as you may end up with broken dishes, shattered wine glasses, and destroyed kitchen appliances. You can easily avoid such mistakes and get your kitchen packed up right in a single weekend or your free time. The significant items to be packaged in this case include:

  • Kitchen Appliances
  • Dinnerware
  • Silverware
  • Pots and Pans
  • Food

Here are our top tips for properly packing your kitchen:

Packing Up Your Small Appliances

It is advisable to keep the original packaging for your small kitchen appliances (i.e. Kitchen-Aid mixers, blenders, coffee makers, etc.). These have been designed by the manufacturer to carry the appliances safely without any form of damage. For cases where you may not have the original packaging, you’ll have to secure a medium-sized packing box. Clean all the appliances thoroughly and dry them before you package them into boxes. Small parts and other fragile items attached to the appliance should be removed and packaged elsewhere as they may fall off during your move. The delicate pieces may be wrapped in a double-layered newspaper bubble wrap or any other wrapping paper available.

Doing Your Dinnerware

Packing your dinnerware should be done neatly by wrapping two layers of packing paper or bubble wrap on the bottom of a box. Proceed by wrapping each piece of dinnerware using a thin layer of packaging paper while you stack them gently one at a time in the box. You may consider adding an extra layer of paper or bubble wrap in the middle of every three dishes to create more cushion. Use tank tops or T-shirts to wrap extremely fragile items such as coffee mugs and wine glasses.

Packaging Pots and Pans

To secure the right box size, grab your biggest pan then place it in the box both vertically and horizontally. If you can secure the lid of the boxit will work perfectly for all the pans. If this does not work, you will have to find a larger box. Once you find a box that works, gently stack the pots and secure them well. With the pots in the box, use a thin piece of packing paper or newsprint to wrap the glass lids and placing them underneath the handles of the pan.

Packaging Silverware

Packing loose silverware haphazardly makes it readily susceptible to damage and is a pain to sort out when unpacking.  To save yourself from this kind of a headache, sort your kitchen silverware based on type. Use a strong piece of string or rubber band to wrap each type of silverware. When done, place all the types of silverware in a strong shoe-box and secure it well with tape. Alternatively, you can leave in the original silverware container and shrink wrap the whole thing to secure the utensils in place.

Packaging Food

You will need to toss out any food item past the expiration date to avoid unnecessary luggage as you move. You may also consider donating any food that might be useful to your local food bank. For food that will be needed, use tote bags and coolers to avoid contamination and move them safely to your new place.
